Accident & Injury Chiropractic
Is it a good idea to go to a chiropractor for an accident or injury? The answer might surprise you. Some chiropractors specialize in sport’s injuries; some practices see only car accident victims.
There are chiropractors on staff in the Olympics and many professional sports such as football have full time chiropractors for their players. Why would they do this? Because chiropractors spend all day everyday working on injuries and accidents that have caused your musculoskeletal system to go wrong.
They optimize the function of your musculoskeletal system. They can treat injuries on the field and get players back into play while at the same time preventing further, more extensive injury.
What if it was a Major Accident or Injury?
In my personal clinic we adjust joints to maintain proper motion, use physiotherapy to dull pain(ice, electrical stimulation, etc), and we give the patient rehabilitation exercises to perform at home. This is a very basic explanation of our standard of care and it would vary depending on your specific accident or injury.
A more serious injury such as a complete tear of a tissue may require surgery to reattach the tissue. Good chiropractors are open to referrals for co-management.
For example, if you hurt your knee in a car accident, I would likely work with a physical therapist. I believe a chiropractor could rehab a knee properly, but my time is better spent adjusting patients.
A One Stop Shop for Accident’s and Injuries
Again, licensed chiropractors are trained to identify emergency situations and follow your care to the end. They can help walk you through a maze of surgeries, treatments, and the like that you may know very little about.
Hopefully at the finish line you’ll have complete restoration of your strength, endurance, and function similar to before your accident or injury.
You should follow the recommendations of your doctors, but it may not be a bad idea to ask your chiropractor what his opinion of XYZ treatment is or even google it. Accident and injury care is a very lucrative business for many doctors and businesses.
Surgery and medication are big money and seem like an “easy” fix. Google the term “Failed Back Surgery Syndrome” and look up the side effects of your medications to see what you should have been informed about, but likely were not. Often times that back pain or headache may have actually be caused by a medication you are on!
Often there are much more conservative and cost effective methods for managing pain, particularly from an accident or injury to the musculoskeletal system. Chiropractors are often well versed in these conservative and alternative methods.
These solutions often require more work than taking a medication or having a surgery. You might learn a stretch that if performed every day, keeps you pain away. You may also learn about how to avoid aggravating movements. Get to know your alternatives, get to know a local Chiropractor.
