What do Chiropractors do? They have their stories of subluxation, but there is a more sophisticated explanation nowadays. Like medical doctors, chiropractors are free to choose how they treat certain conditions.
What does a chiropractor do?
Chiropractors treat what they like to call a “subluxation”. The most down to earth explanation of what that is would be a place in your body where motion between two bones is not normal and each persons nervous system(brain) reacts to this change in motion in different ways.
Chiropractors are trained to find these spots in your body and evaluate whether those reactions from your brain are causing your complaints.
Until recently, researchers didn’t understand what a chiropractor did. Most patients experienced relief when the motion was corrected and, though we didn’t know it thenr, the signals to the brain were corrected.
That is it. That is what a chiropractor does. We find spots that move too little or too much and we very specifically, fix that one spot in an attempt to alleviate your symptoms.
Ok, but what does a chiropractor do??
Good Chiropractors, like any good physician, will perform an exam by asking questions, try to reproduce your pain with tests, then tell you what they think you have and how they plan on treating it. Really good ones might even send you out for additional tests, a second opinion, or a referral to a specialist.
It is very rare for a chiropractor to not be able to provide some benefit. I have personally helped patients with cancer reduce their pain in my office. Did I believe I was curing their cancer? Absolutely not, but I know I was helping them.
Once they tell you their plan, it is your turn to decide whether you want to do it or not. Some people don’t like to hear their bones “pop”. Some people only want to be stretched on a table. Some patients want every bone in their bodies to “pop”.
So what do chiropractors do? They do whatever it takes to fix your motion and restore your brains normal function. Most are trained in a variety of techniques (though we do have our personal favorites) and are willing to accommodate you as the patient.
The truth of the matter is that every technique works if it correctly addresses the underlying problem — that is, faulty motion causing dysfunctional nervous system signals.
But the real art of what a chiropractor does, is choosing the right way to fix your complaints based on how we anticipate your nervous system will react. Just like we all have different personalities, I also make a judgement call about the type of adjustment you would react most favorably to.
Chiropractic didn’t work . . .
What do chiropractors do if a treatment doesn’t work? Hopefully we keep changing and revising until we find the right solution for you. Even though every tool in our toolbox is aimed at fixing motion to fix the nervous system, every nervous system is different.
Some patients need every bone to be “rattled” for their brain to “reset”. Some patients only needed to be set on blocks so their muscles can relax and stop holding their joints in restricted motion (pain).
Truth is, if you have a chiropractor and you told him that his treatment isn’t working, he needs to change his treatment, otherwise, you should change your chiropractor.
So what does a chiropractor do? We fix your motion, too little or too much, in order to fix the signals going to and from your brain.
There are bad chiropractors and bad medical doctors alike. Don’t let a prior bad experience ruin a potentially great and hopefully, less painful future.
